Twitter released a feature today that lets you charge a monthly fee for your followers to subscribe to your account. This lets you offer special features or content to specific people only.
Twitter has released this feature in the hopes that it will draw content creators to the platform and will also take a very small cut of the earnings from this monthly fee. Elon Musk has said that Twitter will not keep any of the money for the first 12 months.
Any content creators who utilize the subscribe feature will keep all the money if they are using the web - or about 92%. If you are using iOS or Android, they charge 30% of your earnings, so you would get about 70% of your revenue after their cut.
The good thing is that after the first year, iOS and Android fees drop to 15% and Twitter will only charge around 5% is my guess at that point, which will lead to about 20% of your earnings being paid to others and keeping 80%. Of course, there are taxes too, after that.
Twitter Blue
Twitter Blue will probably be an important feature to also have and costs $8 per month and allows users to create very long form content as well as video that is in 1080p resolution. Content like that will likely draw more subscribers as well.
Elon Musk has said that he wants Twitter to be less reliant on advertising, and offering services like this is a great way to do that. For the biggest content creators, if they are bringing in $1 million per year, Twitter would likely see $50,000 of that as revenue for that year.
I see Twitter continuing to release more features and even offer a video view of content that is much like YouTube, eventually.
What do you think about this subscription feature - would you use it?
